Once installation and verification are complete, you can start using Chatterbox in your live meetings. The steps below help you get the best possible audio quality and translation performance.

Step 1 — Wear earphones or headphones

Put on earphones or headphones before starting your session. This:
  • Prevents audio feedback and echo, where your speakers feed back into your microphone.
  • Avoids audio looping, where translated audio is re-captured and re-translated.
  • Avoids degraded performance and noisy audio that come from using built-in laptop speakers.
Using only built-in laptop speakers can cause feedback loops, degraded audio quality, and confusion for meeting participants.

Step 2 — Configure language settings

Chatterbox language configuration showing I Speak and They Hear
  • I Speak: Set this to the language you will actually speak during the meeting (for example, English (United States)). Chatterbox listens in this language to understand what you say.
  • They Hear: Set this to the language your audience should hear (for example, Spanish (Spain)). Chatterbox translates your speech from I Speak into They Hear.

Step 3 — Select the correct audio devices

Chatterbox audio device selection
Confirm your microphone device. In Chatterbox, set the microphone to your physical mic — for example:
  • Your USB headset microphone, or
  • Your external microphone, or
  • Your laptop microphone if no other device is available.
Using the right mic ensures your voice is captured clearly for accurate translation. Confirm your output (speaker) device. Set the output to the earphones or headphones you are wearing. If a different device (like monitor speakers or unused outputs) is selected, you may not hear the translated audio or it may be very quiet.
Taking a moment here prevents common issues like “no one can hear me” or “I don’t hear anything.”

Step 4 — Join your meeting using Chatterbox Virtual Audio

Meeting platform audio settings with Chatterbox Virtual Microphone selected
  1. Open your preferred meeting platform (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, etc.).
  2. In the meeting’s audio settings, set your microphone to the Chatterbox virtual device — typically named Chatterbox Virtual Microphone.
  3. Keep your speakers set to the device you normally use (your headphones or earphones).
Why this is important: selecting the Chatterbox Virtual Microphone lets the meeting platform receive audio that has been processed and translated by Chatterbox, rather than your raw microphone feed. This is how Chatterbox delivers live translated speech to your participants.

Optional — Reset Windows audio devices if needed

After installing Chatterbox, Windows may automatically change your default audio devices. If you notice unusual audio behavior in other apps (no sound, or sound coming from the wrong device), reset your defaults:
  1. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and choose Sound settings.
  2. Check both Input and Output devices.
  3. Set Input to your usual microphone (or headset mic).
  4. Set Output to your usual speakers or headphones.
This ensures your computer’s audio behaves as expected outside of Chatterbox, while Chatterbox continues to use its virtual devices during sessions.

Step 5 — Start a Chatterbox session

Chatterbox Start Session button
  1. Review your languages and audio devices one last time.
  2. Click Start Session in the center of the Chatterbox window.
  3. Begin speaking normally in your meeting.
Once the session is active, Chatterbox will listen to your speech, translate it, and output translated audio in real time according to your I Speak and They Hear settings. Your participants will hear you in their selected language through the Chatterbox Virtual Microphone.
With these steps complete, Chatterbox is configured for live meetings and optimized for clear audio and accurate translation.
